It might appear unusual to publish a letter in this space recently written to someone who leads an organization that competes with MidWestOne. But Richard Davis, CEO of US Bank, is an unusual and extraordinary person. Persons who stand for integrity and who advocate for their professions are worthy of our respect and admiration. Below is a note that I recently sent to Mr. Davis.
Mr. Richard Davis, Chief Executive Officer
800 Nicollet Mall
Minneapolis, MN 55402
We’ve only met once, when you spoke three years ago to the American Bankers Association Board of Directors in Washington, D.C. I told you that day how much I admire you and how much I have appreciated the way you have used your podium to advocate for our industry. During a time when bankers were often “the bad guys” in America, you stood tall in the saddle and never apologized for our industry.
Congratulations on your retirement from a splendid and noteworthy career at US Bank. I’ve told many over the past few years that I believe USB is the best run bank in America which is, obviously, a direct reflection on your leadership and vision.
You were kind enough to be encouraging when our company acquired Golden Valley, Minnesota based Central Bank two years ago. MidWestOne is delighted to be in your home city and the surrounding area and we believe that our future is bright in bringing our brand of community banking to the Twin Cities. Thank you for helping make that possible.
To say thank you for what you have done for bankers in America during your career seems a bit inadequate. I wish you and Theresa the very best as you “re-direct” your lives. I know you are going to emerge somewhere making a big contribution for good, as you always do.
I end with a story: For the past 16 years, I have taught a leadership class at the Graduate School of Banking in Colorado. I have had many US Bankers in class. Never once have I heard a negative word uttered about Richard Davis. That also goes for the US Bankers I know in Iowa City. This speaks volumes.
Very sincerely yours,
Charles N. Funk
